Meet Alvin, Brandeis Class of 2018: Video Transcript

[Black screen]

Alvin: My parents wanted me to get out of the house as soon as possible.

[Fade from black to a young man sitting outside]

I got in on a red-eye flight. It was like 6:00 in the morning.

[Chipper music plays, an aqua-colored graphic of an airplane flies diagonally across the screen]

Female Narrator: Meet Alvin.

[Black and white footage of Alvin smiling and giving the peace sign in a dining area in Lower Usdan. Onscreen text: Alvin Liu. That footage freezes and a half-swipe shows more black and white footage of Alvin speaking in front of a blackboard. Colorful graphics appear: a brain with visible electricity, the text "GPA 3.6," a map of California labeled "Established LA, California," and the text "winning smile." Color footage sweeps in with an accordion effect of Alvin walking through the Shapiro Campus Center. Footage changes to Alvin seated in a room with a brick wall as backdrop.]

Alvin: Hey guys, I'm Alvin.

[B-roll: bicycles, Alvin waking in the morning and putting on his glasses. Text onscreen: "double major - computer science, business; double minor - economics, history."]

I moved in, my mom helped me move in and then she actually went off on a road trip with my aunt.

[B-roll: Alvin sitting outside, sped-up footage of students walking on campus, Alvin in the dining hall, a hand writing in a notebook, Alvin greeting students all over campus, other students in the dining area in Usdan, Alvin shaking hands with two laughing young men on campus, students smiling and laughing in lecture halls]

I grew up in California, spent most of my life in California and you know in college application season came around all my friends were like "we're gonna stay in California!" but really I wanted a change of pace.

[B-roll: a point of view shot looking through the stacks in the library, a professor lecturing in class, a colorful poster for a teaching forum]

I wanted to get out and kind of see the world, so when I was applying to schools I really was looking at the East Coast.

[B-roll: a fish-eye shot of posters advertising countries around the word]

A lot of schools in Boston, in New York and then after location I really looked at the curriculum, the flexibility of the curriculum. I was really unsure about what I wanted to do in college, what I want to study, what I wanted to do after college so it really was looking for a place that gave me the flexibility to study whatever I wanted, explore myself, and I think that's really what made me realize that this is a place that I could be at.

[B-roll: Alvin presenting in a classroom, a student swinging high on a swing outside, students working together at a large table, Alvin choosing clothing from his closet, students putting their arms around one another, a shot through a window frame at students smiling and talking at Academic Services.]

How the people at Brandeis interacted with each other, the friendliness, the welcoming, the passion rubs off on you and you become a nicer person, a better person because of the people that you interact with.

[Fade to white with blue text "Brandeis University."]
