Stories: I am a First Generation

Rebecca Leon

Rebecca LeonHi, my name is Rebecca Leon and I’m from Salt Lake City, Utah. I’m a senior majoring in Environmental Studies and minoring in Climate Justice, Science, and Policy. As a first-generation Latina college student at Brandeis, being part of the Gen One Network on campus has provided me with a welcoming community of students, alumni, and staff who have been helpful guides as I navigate my years at Brandeis.

Being a first-generation student at Brandeis is a rewarding and challenging experience filled with growth. In fall '23, Andrey Gonzales-Baeza and I founded Labor Lingo for the Heller Social Impact Startup Challenge, earning third place. We continued in the Brandeis Innovation Spark Tank Program, securing third place again. Labor Lingo was honored with the Asper Student Startup Award for Social Impact and Brandeisian Values that semester. As a first-generation student at Brandeis, co-founding Labor Lingo and receiving these accolades are achievements I cherish.

As a first-generation Latina college student, it's important to remind myself that it's okay to be the first — the first in my family, the first in class, the first to break the generational cycle. I prioritize and value what matters most to me and own the value of being the first.

For two years, I served as the Student Fellow for the Myra Kraft Achievers Program (MKAP). Previously, I was a Peer Counselor in Student Financial Services, fostering close friendships within the Brandeis community. These positions have really added immense value to my life. As a first-generation Latina student at Brandeis, I’ve actively contributed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout my various roles and initiatives on campus. Being with MKAP, I’ve advocated for underrepresented students’ needs and supported their integration into campus life at Brandeis. As a Teaching Assistant for Oceanography in Puerto Rico, I’ve also worked to ensure a culturally sensitive learning environment, fostering inclusivity and understanding among students from diverse backgrounds.

One of my goals is to continue working on Labor Lingo and taking life risks. Embrace your journey and the strengths that come with it. Own the value of being the first. There is always room for growth so prioritize what matters most to you.
