In August, we celebrated National Dog Day – now it’s time for National Cat Day! GSAS students’ cats are some of their most beloved companions. For National Cat Day 2024, we asked students to send in pictures of their cats, along with short descriptions of what makes them so great. Read on for some purr-fect pictures and bios!

Name: Fuzz
Human Companion: Rafael Abrahams, History PhD student
Bio: “Fuzz is eleven years old. He is sweet and sleepy. He likes to nuzzle next to me for pets, and recently he started licking my arm.”

Name: Chicken
Human Companion: Alexandra Burkot, Musicology PhD student
Bio: “Chicken, my roommate’s cat, is incredibly soft. She makes sure I take breaks by yelling at me to come and fill her food bowl (even though she has already had dinner).”

Names: Xiao Liang (right) and Xiao Ya
Human Companion: Zizhang Chen, Computer Science PhD student
Bio: “Xiao Liang is a three-year-old domestic tabby. She loves head scratching and rubbing against my legs. Xiao Ya is a three-year-old tuxedo. He is a visitor and will probably stay for a few months. He is energetic at night and loves playing with cat toys.”

Name: Evie
Human Companion: Nida Farheen, Biochemistry and Biophysics PhD student
Bio: “Evie is a five-year-old floof. She likes to jump on me to wake me up in the morning.”

Name: Hobbes
Human Companion: Calvin Fluit, English and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies master’s student
Bio: “Hobbes is fifteen months old and an energetic rascal. This picture of him was taken this time last year when he was much smaller, but just as troublesome!”

Name: Oliver
Human Companion: Lianne Gallant, History PhD student
Bio: “Oliver is three years old. He loves to chase lasers and nap in the sun.”

Name: Frankie
Human Companion: Andrea Guerrero, Neuroscience PhD student
Bio: "Frankie loves playing fetch and stealing my office chair to nap whenever I am working on my dissertation. He also hates wearing anything, including a collar or a sweater, so I had to rush to take this picture."

Name: Lilith
Human Companion: Mimi Kay, Molecular and Cell Biology PhD student
Bio: “Lilith is three years old. She is currently working towards getting her PhD in Evil Mastermind Studies. Her dissertation work is on the topic of stealing food from humans. She loves chin scratches and watching birds by the window.”

Names: Memphis (left) and Martini
Human Companion: Abigail King, Molecular and Cell Biology PhD student
Bio: “One-year-old Memphis and two-year-old Martini are very affectionate and playful brothers who love relaxing in their windowsill hammock, enjoying pets and cuddles, playing with toys, hunting household bugs, and begging their parents for treats! Memphis and Martini were both adopted from the MSPCA shelter in Salem.”

Name: Grogu
Human Companion: Tong Lin, Psychology PhD student
Bio: “Grogu is a three-year old ENTJ. In her free time, she likes staying late at the Volen Center like a PhD student. She never says no to getting petted on her head like a puppy. Her Instagram is @groguthefluffy.”

Human Companion: Ishan Mukhopadhyay, English PhD student
Bio: “Nina and I would never miss the chance for an afternoon siesta. General Toussaint is the gentlest and friendliest thing that ever lived.”

Name: Mibby
Human Companion: David Nejezchleba, Philosophy master’s student
Bio: “Mibby loves going on walks and knocking popcorn out of my hand.”

Bio: “Sasha is ten and likes to be alone. Mia is four and likes eating people’s food.”

Bio: “Minnie, the small brown tabby, is a two-year-old girl who is very sweet and loves playing with her toys and sitting in her box while I work on the computer. Rafa is our twelve-year-old void kitty. He likes cuddling, chasing Minnie, and making biscuits on my face.”

Name: Harvey
Human Companion: Cat Rosch, History PhD student
Bio: “Harvey thinks he is also a PhD student. He enjoys trying to drink my coffee, napping to avoid his responsibilities, and demanding attention when I'm trying to do research.”

Name: Chups
Human Companion: Luke Sim, Psychology PhD student
Bio: “The only way Chups was ever going to catch a mouse would be if he landed on top of it.”

Name: Dio
Human Companion: Leighton Souza, Near Eastern and Judaic Studies PhD student
Bio: “Dio just turned two! Since being taken in off the street, he's learned to love couch cuddles and whatever food he can get his paws on. While he may only have one brain cell, he knows that he can get whatever he wants with a desperate meow and a sweet l’il nose lick.”

Name: Persephone
Human Companion: Charlie Summers, Anthropology master’s student
Bio: “Persephone is a six-year-old tabby cat who knows how rare she is. She enjoys eating, playing with her worm-on-a-string, and sleeping in inopportune locations.”

Name: Pomegranate (Pomu)
Human Companion: Mai Xu, Psychology master’s student
Bio: “Pomegranate (Pomu) is a four-year-old ragdoll who was born in China (a Chinese-born American). He loves to go out for walks, watch birds, interact with other animals, and play hide and seek. Although most cats love to be petted, Pomu prefers some privacy and social boundaries. He only comes up for a pet when he feels like it. He traveled to Waltham with me, and he’s enjoying the weather in the New England area.”

Name: Chashao
Human Companion: Xiaoya Yang, Anthropology and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies master’s student
Bio: “Chashao is named after a kind of marinated pork that my hometown, Guangdong, China, is famous for. Chashao is now four years old and is really social and vocal. He is also super sweet and will come to me every time I cry.”

Human Companion: Alyssa Stalsberg Canelli, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs for GSAS
Bio: “Alexander and Luca are brothers, rescued by Black Cat Rescue. They joined our family last summer as kittens and are now fully at the center of our family shenanigans!”
