Can you describe your career path to your current job and some of your responsibilities in this position?

I recently graduated from Brandeis University with a Ph.D. in Mathematics. This fall, I will be starting at Boston College as an Assistant Professor of the Practice in Mathematics within the newly-established Messina College. During my time at Brandeis, I served as an instructor of record for several courses in the Math Department and also mentored students in the Posse Program. These experiences were pivotal in preparing me for my new role at Boston College.

What services and/or resources did you use at Brandeis for your career search?

At Brandeis, I actively participated in career-related workshops sponsored by the Math Department and GSAS Professional Development. Key resources included alumni panels and job application preparation sessions with Jon Anjaria. Marika McCann played a crucial role by helping me clarify my career goals, connecting me with relevant individuals in the Brandeis community, conducting practice interviews, and guiding me through the entire job application process.

What skills from your Brandeis degree have you found most valuable in your current work?

My experience teaching math courses as an instructor of record has been incredibly valuable in my transition to becoming an Assistant Professor. Additionally, serving as a Posse Mentor equipped me with essential skills to support and mentor students effectively.

What advice do you have for current students as they embark on their job search?

Start engaging with career-related events and building your professional network early on. Take the initiative to speak with professors in your department about their career paths and seek opportunities to connect with alumni. Keep your career options open and explore various paths to gain a comprehensive understanding of potential opportunities. Utilize resources provided by the GSAS Professional Development Team throughout your academic journey. Lastly, be proactive in seeking additional experiences such as volunteering or mentoring students, as these can significantly enhance your skill set and broaden your career prospects.
