Assistant Professor at Bowdoin CollegeRay Maresca

Can you describe your career path to your current job and some of your responsibilities in this position?

I am beginning my tenure as an Assistant Professor at Bowdoin College directly out of graduate school. My academic journey started with an undergraduate degree in mathematics, followed by a master's in applied mathematics and data analytics at Manhattan College. I then pursued a PhD in mathematics from Brandeis University under the guidance of Professor Kiyoshi Igusa. In my new role at Bowdoin, I will be teaching mathematics courses, continuing my research in representations of quivers, and contributing to various committees.

What services and/or resources did you use at Brandeis for your career search?

Brandeis and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) offer numerous services aimed at assisting students with their job searches. I primarily relied on the expertise of the faculty and staff. My advisor, Professor Igusa, was instrumental in helping me prepare my research statement. Additionally, Professor Becci Torrey and Marika McCann provided invaluable assistance with my cover letter, teaching statement, and diversity statement.

What skills from your Brandeis degree have you found most valuable in your current work?

My role at Bowdoin is a direct continuation of my responsibilities as a PhD student at Brandeis. The skills I developed in becoming an independent researcher and constructing and teaching mathematics courses are crucial for my current position. Furthermore, my experience serving on committees at Brandeis has prepared me to continue similar service at Bowdoin College.

What advice do you have for current students as they embark on their job search?

Brandeis offers numerous resources to help improve your application materials. My advice is to take full advantage of these services! Reach out to faculty and staff for feedback on your application materials and participate in mock interviews. Attend group events that prepare you for the job search process. The job search can be overwhelming, but don't underestimate yourself. Apply to every job that seems like a good fit, even if it feels like a stretch.
