A broad overview of the economic and business history of East Asia from the 16th to the 20th centuries, focusing primarily on China and Japan. The course seeks to explain what distinguished the economic development of East Asia from the rest of the world and how, after much delay, this region emerged as a powerhouse of the global economy by the late 20th century. Usually offered every second year.
