Anna Deavere Smith came to campus in March for a two-day residency as the 2019 Richman Distinguished Fellow in Public Life. As part of her public presentation, the playwright/actor performed segments from her acclaimed one-woman show “Notes From the Field” and reflected on her approach to her work. To create “Notes,” Smith conducted interviews with more than 250 people across the U.S., talking with them about their experiences with the criminal justice system, the education system, poverty and violence. Seventeen of those interviews were transformed into characters (all played by Smith), each of whom recounts his or her own story. The play won an Obie in 2017, and a film adaptation debuted on HBO last year. |
