Surrealism(s) – Then & Now

On View January 22, 2025 - June 1, 2025
Mildred S. Lee Gallery

Surrealism(s) – Then & Now celebrates the centennial of the Surrealist movement. The exhibition traces Surrealism’s evolution from its early 20th-century origins to its lasting influence. As a movement, Surrealism bequeathed a playful–yet penetrating–set of tools that continue to be utilized by artists today. Drawn from the museum's permanent collection, Surrealism(s) – Then & Now highlights artists’ fascination with and exploration of the subconscious, sexuality, dreams, the interiority of the mind, the uncanny, and mythical imagery.

Artists on view include William Baziotes, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Saint Clair Cemin, Giorgio de Chirico, Gregory Crewdson, Dorothy Cross, Mary Beth Edelson, Max Ernst, Mona Hatoum, Frida Kahlo, Hayv Kahraman, William Kent, André Kertész, Ljuba, René Magritte, André Masson, Roberto Matta, Joan Miró, Tracy Moffatt, Tony Oursler, Rona Pondick, Alexis Rockman, Tim Roda, Pierre Roy, Kay Sage, and Yves Tanguy.

Surrealism(s) – Then & Now is curated by Dr. Gannit Ankori, Henry and Lois Foster Director and Chief Curator and Professor of Fine Arts and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Chad Sirois, Associate Director of Communications and Marketing.
