Brandeis University has announced the launch of a transformational campus development project: a new state-of-the-art residence hall that will add 631 beds to the university’s housing portfolio. Construction is expected to begin in June 2025.
The new residence hall marks the first phase of a three-phased housing initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of student life through new construction, major renovations and the strategic removal of aging facilities. Located on the university’s lower campus, the project represents one of the most significant investments in campus infrastructure in Brandeis’ history.
“This is more than just a building project — it’s a statement about our priorities,” said Interim President Arthur Levine. “We are investing in our students and in the future of Brandeis. This residence hall will support community, well-being and the dynamic student experience that defines our university.”
With design led by Boston-based William Rawn Associates and Dimeo Construction serving as the construction project manager, the residence hall will be a model of sustainable construction, targeting Passive House standards and incorporating all-electric systems, triple-glazed windows and a rooftop prepared for solar panels. Additional features include:
- Air conditioning and full accessibility
- 14 community kitchens and lounges
- All restrooms are gender-neutral and single-occupancy
- An exercise room for students
- A multi-purpose social space for the campus community that will accommodate up to 150 people
- Outdoor bike shelters and sustainably landscaped terraces and gardens
The complex represents a bold step in reimagining how campus spaces can support academic and social life at Brandeis. Organized into 14 residential “neighborhoods” of approximately 50 students — with a mix of single and double bedrooms, lounges and kitchens — the building is designed to foster connection and community.
“As we look to the future of campus housing, our goal is to create spaces that foster connection, health and belonging,” said Andrea Dine, vice president of student affairs. “This new residence hall is designed with those values at its core.”
The building will also serve summer programs and extend Brandeis’ capacity to host academic and cultural gatherings year-round.
Brandeis continues to engage the Waltham community throughout the planning process and has incorporated student feedback into the design and amenities. Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2027, with occupancy beginning that summer.
