Dedication
George J. Goldsmith letter, 1965
This exhibit is dedicated to the memory of Dr. George J. Goldsmith.
Dr. George J. Goldsmith was a professor at Boston College for over 40 years, and prior to that he worked with students at Princeton University. George was instrumental in encouraging countless people to be more than they ever thought they could be. He not only assisted students in their studies, but took a deep interest in their personal lives and struggles.
During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, George worked closely with activists and leaders of various groups. The SCOPE project, which helped people to register to vote in the South, became a special focus for him when I, his daughter, joined a group of volunteers from Brandeis University.
The summer of 1965 was when a group of us accompanied the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), to push the boundaries of how people of different backgrounds can coexist in harmony. We went south along with many other groups from other universities, and, after a brief orientation, we spread out to several states and we encouraged disenfranchised folks to register and make their voice heard.
Hopefully, this path will continue into the future to make all peoples accepting of each other.
