Brandeis University’s proximity to Boston is a major perk for students.
But for outdoor enthusiasts like me, the city of Waltham (which Brandeis calls home) offers no shortage of adventure-worthy destinations.
Maybe kayaking along the Charles River sounds like the perfect way to spend your afternoon. Or perhaps a quiet walk in the park is more your speed — with bonus points for views of the iconic Boston skyline in the distance.
No matter your preference, Waltham has you covered if you’re eager to get outside and have a good time.
Here are four of my favorite outdoor spots near the Brandeis International Business School campus. Enjoy!
The Charles River is New England’s most prominent urban river, flowing right through the heart of Waltham on its journey to Boston Harbor. The banks of the Charles are just a short walk from campus, making it a popular locale for Brandeis students, faculty and staff seeking both adventure and leisure. Popular activities include fishing, kayaking, canoeing, biking and running along the Charles River Reservation’s 20-plus miles of trails.
Nothing beats an autumn or spring stroll through Prospect Hill Park. This beautiful 273-acre wooded park offers stunning views of the surrounding cityscape and Boston skyline. In addition to a winding network of hiking and walking trails, the park features expansive open space — perfect for picnics, games or simply lounging in the sun. The park is also a popular destination for dog walkers.
The Western Greenway runs along a 12-mile loop of open space spanning Waltham and the neighboring communities of Belmont and Lexington. This peaceful escape offers picturesque views of wooded and wetlands landscapes. The Greenway also connects to the Massachusetts Central Rail Trail, offering opportunities for longer excursions and exploration.
If you’re looking to stay active on campus, Brandeis is home to a number of outdoor athletic facilities — including the Gordon Field and Outdoor Track and the Cordish Tennis Center. And in addition to its Division III varsity athletic program, the university offers both club and intramural sport opportunities as well as a fitness program. These activities are a fun way to stay fit while meeting new people.
