Statement of Financial Responsibility
(Last Updated 06/26/2024)
PAYMENT OF FEES/PROMISE TO PAY:
I understand that when I register for any class at Brandeis University or receive any service from Brandeis University I accept full responsibility to pay all tuition, fees and other associated costs assessed as a result of my registration and/or receipt of services. I further understand and agree that my registration and acceptance of these terms constitutes a contractual agreement (i.e., a financial obligation in the form of an educational loan as defined by the U.S. Bankruptcy Code at 11 U.S.C. §523{a){8)) in which Brandeis University is providing me educational services, deferring some or all of my payment obligation for those services, and I promise to pay for all assessed tuition, fees and other associated costs by the published or assigned due date. I understand and agree that if I drop or withdraw from some or all of the classes for which I register, I will be responsible for paying all or a portion of tuition and fees in accordance with the published tuition refund schedule.
I have read the terms and conditions of the published tuition refund schedule and understand those terms are incorporated herein by reference. I further understand that my failure to attend class or receive a bill does not absolve me of my financial responsibility as described above. If I decide to completely withdraw from Brandeis University, I will follow the instructions set forth in the University Bulletin, which I understand and agree are incorporated herein by reference.
By registering at Brandeis University, students acknowledge and agree that Brandeis University reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify its educational, extracurricular, and other programs for its students at any time, including, without limitation, its right to provide any of the educational and extracurricular programs remotely. Tuition and mandatory fees have been set regardless of the method of instruction and will not be refunded in the event that instruction or programs occur remotely for any part of the academic year for any reason.
Brandeis University assumes no liability for delay or failure to provide educational or other services or facilities due to causes beyond its reasonable control. Causes include, without limitation, power failure, fire, strikes by university employees or others, damage by natural elements, pandemics, and acts of public authorities. The university will, however, exert reasonable efforts, when it judges them to be appropriate, to provide comparable services, facilities, or performance; but its inability or failure to do so shall not subject the university to liability.
Brandeis University reserves the sole right to promulgate and change rules and regulations and to make changes of any nature in its program; calendar; admissions policies, procedures, and standards; degree requirements; fees; and academic schedule whenever necessary or desirable, including, without limitation, changes in course content and class schedule, the cancellation of scheduled classes and other academic activities, and the substitution of alternatives for scheduled classes and other academic activities. In any such case, the university will give whatever notice is reasonably practical.
DELINQUENT ACCOUNT/COLLECTION
Financial Hold: I understand and agree that if I fail to pay my student account bill or any monies due and owing Brandeis University by the scheduled due date, Brandeis University will place a financial hold on my student account, preventing me from registering for future classes or receiving my diploma. Failure to pay may result in my withdrawal from the University.
Late Payment Charge: I understand and agree that if I fail to pay my student account bill or any monies due and owing Brandeis University by the scheduled due date, Brandeis University will assess a late payment charge at the rate of $100 or 2%, whichever is greater on the past due portion of my student account.
Collection Agency Fees: I understand and accept that if I fail to pay my student account bill or any monies due, and owing, including any loan administered by the Brandeis Office of Student Financial Services, to Brandeis University by the scheduled due date, and fail to make acceptable payment arrangements to bring my account current, Brandeis University may refer my delinquent account to a collection agency. If Brandeis University refers my account balance to a third party for collection, whether an attorney or collection agency, I will be responsible for any costs (including, but not limited to collection fees) associated with attempting to collect the monies due and owing. I understand a collection fee will be assessed and will be due and owing in full at the time of the referral to the third party. The collection fee will be calculated at the maximum amount permitted by applicable law, but not to exceed 40 percent of my delinquent account. For purposes of this provision, the third party may be a debt collection company or an attorney. If a lawsuit is filed to recover an outstanding balance, I will also be responsible for any costs associated with the lawsuit such as court costs, attorney fees, or other applicable costs. Finally, I understand that my delinquent account may be furnished to one or more of the national credit bureaus.
DEPOSITS
Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions Deposits: All students that are required to pay a deposit when admitted will have the deposit applied to the first semester of study. If a student decides not to enroll at Brandeis University the deposit will be forfeited.
FEDERAL AID
I understand that any federal Title IV financial aid that I receive, except for Federal Work Study wages, will first be applied to any outstanding balance on my account for tuition, fees, housing and food. Title IV financial aid includes aid from the Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Direct Loan, PLUS Loan, Perkins Loan, and TEACH Grant programs. I authorize Brandeis University to apply my Title IV financial aid to other charges assessed to my student account such as student health insurance, parking permits, service fees and fines, and any other education-related charges. I further understand that this authorization will remain in effect until I rescind it and that I may withdraw it at any time by following the instructions on the Student Financial Services (SFS) website. If I do not wish to agree to this portion of the Financial Responsibility Agreement (FRA), I understand that I can contact the Office of Student Financial Services at 781-736-3700 or sfs@brandeis.edu to request to sign a version that does not include this paragraph. If some or all of my financial aid is revoked because I dropped or failed to attend a class, I agree to repay all revoked aid disbursed to my account and resulted in a credit balance refunded to me.
COMMUNICATION
Method of Communication: I understand and agree that Brandeis University uses the Brandeis e-mail account as an official method of communication with me, and that therefore I am responsible for reading the e-mails I receive from Brandeis University on a timely basis.
Contact: I authorize Brandeis University and its agents and contractors to contact me at my current and any future cellular phone number(s), email address(es) or wireless device(s) regarding my delinquent student account(s)/loan(s), any other debt I owe to Brandeis University. I authorize Brandeis University and its agents and contractors to use automated telephone dialing equipment, artificial or pre-recorded voice or text messages, and personal calls and emails, in their efforts to contact me.
Updating Contact Information: I understand and agree that I am responsible for keeping Brandeis University records up to date with my current physical addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers in Workday. Upon leaving Brandeis University for any reason, it is my responsibility to provide Brandeis University with updated contact information for purposes of continued communication regarding any amounts that remain due and owing to Brandeis University. My Brandeis email account will be inactivated 6 months after graduation/withdrawal. I understand agree that I am responsible for adding a current non Brandeis email to Workday and Nelnet prior to graduation/withdrawal. A job aid with instructions for adding student as Authorized Party is available on the SFS website. Perkins or Brandeis institutional loan borrowers must also update their addresses with the loan servicer, Heartland ECSI.
METHOD OF BILLING
I understand that Brandeis University generates one e-bill each semester. The bill is available as a PDF file and accessed through the Nelnet Student Account Portal. (Please note that all billing for GPS students and Summer School charges are solely electronic.) Brandeis Tuition Due Date Policy is available on the SFS website. Subsequent student account activity will be available on the Nelnet Student Account Portal. Therefore, I am responsible for viewing and paying my student account balance by the scheduled due date. I further understand that failure to review my student account detail does not constitute a valid reason for not paying my bill on time. Brandeis reserves the right to change this method at any time.
RETURNED PAYMENTS/FAILED PAYMENT AGREEMENTS
If a payment made to my student account is returned by the bank for any reason, I agree to repay the original amount of the payment plus a returned payment fee of $30. I understand that returned payments and/or failure to comply with the terms of any payment plan or agreement I make with Brandeis University may result in cancellation of my enrollment, suspension of my eligibility to register for future classes, inability to use a payment plan for future terms, requirement to pay in certified funds and/or withdrawal from Brandeis University.
STUDENT AGE
I understand and agree that if I am younger than the applicable age of majority when I execute this agreement that the educational services provided by Brandeis University are a necessity, and I am contractually obligated pursuant to the "doctrine of necessaries."
I have read and agree to the terms of the Financial Responsibility Acknowledgement document for the TermYEAR academic period.
