Financial Aid for International Students 2024-25
Throughout its 75-year history, Brandeis has valued diversity within its student body. Each year, significant institutional resources help support international students at the undergraduate level. The primary obligation for meeting educational costs remains with the families of students admitted to the university, but we are pleased to assist with university funds.
Determination of Aid Offer
The Office of Student Financial Services has reviewed the CSS Profile and supporting documents that you sent with your application for admission. Using the financial information you reported on your application, the staff has calculated your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the amount of financial resources you and your parent(s) are expected to contribute. The amount of your tentative financial aid package is based on your EFC and our cost of attendance. Please note that additional information (such as documentation of parent income and assets) may be required to finalize your financial aid. Your financial aid package fully meets your calculated financial need. Students who do not submit a financial aid application before they have been admitted will not be considered for grant and scholarship funds.
If you or your family have experienced a change in your financial circumstances since filing the Profile, you may request reconsideration of your need-based financial aid decision.
Early Decision students must submit appeals by March 1 and Regular Decision students by April 15. Requests for reconsideration are considered on a first come, first served basis.
Grants and Scholarships
Brandeis scholarships for international students are based on the academic and personal records submitted and are need-sensitive. If a scholarship is given to a student who has significant financial need, the scholarship may be supplemented with other forms of assistance to meet the need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Services. Financial aid packages are often a combination of grants/scholarships and on-campus employment. To be considered for Brandeis grant and scholarship assistance, students must indicate their intent to apply for financial aid, and submit a financial aid application, prior to admission. International students cannot apply for scholarship consideration for the current year, or future years, once they have received their admission letter. Successful academic performance at the university does not initiate or increase grant or scholarship assistance. Scholarship amounts will be prorated for any semester in which you are considered less than full time or are charged less than the full-time tuition rate.
Wien International Scholarship
The Wien International Scholarship Program has funded hundreds of students from all over the world since its inception in 1958. These need-based scholarships provide assistance to exceptionally accomplished international applicants who demonstrate strong academic achievement as well as significant extracurricular community involvement.
Wien Scholarship recipients are chosen by the Office of Admissions. If you have been selected for a Wien or other Brandeis scholarship, a notice will be included when you receive your admission decision. Candidates who have been offered admission have been considered for all scholarship opportunities.
Scholarships are renewable on the basis of continued demonstrated need for a maximum of eight semesters of undergraduate study, unless advanced standing is awarded for previous academic work. In such cases, the grant will be for fewer than eight semesters. Satisfactory progress toward graduation must be maintained for renewal. Wien Scholars must reside on campus; scholars who do not reside on campus will forfeit the housing and meals portion of their scholarship.
Alumni and Friends Grant
The Alumni and Friends Grant is direct-gift aid from the university that a student does not need to repay. Eligibility for this fund is based on financial need. Generous gifts and donations from alumni, parents, and friends of the university provide funds for this grant, including several endowed scholarships, as a symbol of their commitment and dedication to future Brandeis graduates. Select students receive recognition of their achievements, generally as part of their financial aid package, as recipients of these special awards. Students may not apply for specific endowed scholarships; recipients of these awards will be selected and notified by the university.
The Alumni and Friends Grant is renewable on the basis of continued demonstrated need for a maximum of eight undergraduate semesters at Brandeis, unless the student begins university studies with advanced standing; in such cases, the grant will be for fewer than eight semesters. Satisfactory progress toward graduation must be maintained.
University Employment
University Employment is funded entirely by the university. Students receive a weekly paycheck based upon actual hours worked. Actual earnings will depend upon the availability of hours involved in any given position. Although the Office of Student Financial Services provides students with listings of available positions on campus, it cannot guarantee employment. It is the student’s responsibility to secure and maintain a job that will allow him or her to fulfill the work allocation. The University Employment allotment is not credited to the student’s account. In planning your payment of costs for each semester, please note that the work allotment should not be subtracted from what is due.
In the first semester, students receive grant funds instead of University Employment. This is to allow students to better afford books and personal expenses upon arrival, as it can take time to secure a job on campus. Since students receive more grant funds in the first semester, the initial bill will be lower than subsequent bills. In future semesters, students will be expected to utilize an employment allotment for each term.

Calculating the Amount Due Annually
Knowing your financial aid details is the first step in the process of determining what you will owe for a year’s education at Brandeis. The Office of Student Financial Services issues billing statements prior to the start of each semester. Fall-semester bills will be due August 2, 2024, and spring-semester bills will be due December 16, 2024.

Travel, books, and personal costs not due directly to Brandeis are not included in this worksheet. We estimate $1,000 annually for books and $1,200 annually for personal expenses, although personal expenses vary greatly. Travel expenses will vary depending upon the country from which you are traveling.
Payment to Brandeis University
Payment must be made each semester according to the schedule determined by the Office of Student Financial Services. Acceptance of the Financial Aid Offer
We will presume that you are accepting the offer of financial aid when you return the enrollment form and deposit payment to the Office of Admissions.
Taxability of Financial Aid
In accordance with the Tax Reform Act of 1986, if your aggregate scholarship and grant assistance exceeds tuition, required fees for course instruction or academic enrollment, and books/supplies (for which receipts have been kept), the amount in excess must be included in your taxable income. You are responsible for determining whether your scholarship, in whole or in part, should be included as taxable income. Wages earned through the Federal Work-Study and University Employment programs are taxable wage income and must be reported on your income-tax forms if you are required to file. You will receive a W-2 Wage and Income Statement from the university by January 31 for the previous tax year. Please contact the Internal Revenue Service or a tax preparer for further information or assistance with these tax issues.
Renewal of the Financial Aid Offer
Your financial aid is offered for one year at a time. You must reapply for financial aid each academic year for which you wish to be considered for assistance. The amount of financial aid that you receive after the first year may vary, reflecting changes in your family’s financial situation, the costs of attending Brandeis, and the availability of funding, which may affect the amount of your Wien Scholarship or Alumni and Friends Grant from year to year. (Please note that your financial aid package will be based on standard living expense costs for on- or off-campus housing; Wien Scholars must live on campus to receive funds for living expenses.) Since Brandeis meets full calculated financial need for undergraduate students, financial aid packages will be increased each year by the amount of the tuition increase, subject to the actual cost of attendance and any changes in the calculated expected family contribution.
To reapply for financial aid, you must file the CSS Profile application and submit documentation of your parents’ income and assets by March 1 of each year. Failure to file all renewal application materials by the stated deadline may result in a limited or partial offer, registration complications, and/or late fees on your student account.
