Naomi Baron’s book on language and technology, “How We Read Now: Strategic Choices for Print, Screen and Audio,” will be published this spring by Oxford University Press. Samuel Heilman, P’98, P’02, is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Sociology, having retired from City University of New York in August after teaching there for 47 years. He and wife Ellin Kaufman ’69 have moved to Jerusalem to be near their four children and 11 grandchildren. Samuel still writes books and reviews, as well as occasional columns for Haaretz, Moment Magazine and other publications. Kenneth Helphand’s seventh book, “Hops: Historic Photographs of the Oregon Hopscape,” was published by Oregon State University Press in October. He recently retired after 45 years of teaching landscape architecture at the University of Oregon, in Eugene. In 2020, Ron Kronish, P’99, marked 51 years of marriage to wife Amy, P’99, whom he met when he was a senior at Brandeis and she was in her first year. “Since then,” he writes, “we have been blessed with three wonderful daughters, three superb sons-in-law and six terrific grandchildren.” Barry Potvin is chair of the Plymouth, Massachusetts, Board of Health. Mark Simon writes, “Though it has been a harrowing year for us all, I feel particularly blessed with our son Tom announcing his engagement to a beautiful New York City teacher, a healthy family all around and a very busy architecture practice. It has been fun working with Ron Ratner on a large addition to the Park Synagogue, as well as with his sister-in-law Susie (Weisberger) Ratner, the synagogue’s president.”
