Reflections on a 75th-Anniversary Year

In October, approximately 3,000 alumni and friends gathered on campus for a festive weekend commemorating Brandeis’ 75th anniversary, and the founding of a distinctive and important institution. Though the onset of the Israel-Hamas war lent a solemn note to the festivities, it also underscored the continued relevance of Brandeis’ history and mission.

But the weekend was just the beginning; the celebration continued throughout the year and around the world. “It was wonderful to see thousands of alumni engage with their alma mater and connect with one another this year,” says Amy Cohen ’85, president of the Brandeis University Alumni Association.

Here are some of the activities that defined Brandeis’ 75th year.

Repairing the World

In keeping with Brandeis’ commitment to making the world a better place, the 75th-anniversary year included a community service component.

The Global Service Initiative challenged alumni, students, faculty, and staff to perform 75,000 acts of community service in honor of the anniversary. Alumni stepped up in droves to give their time, expertise, and financial support to countless organizations.

In true Brandeis spirit, the community surpassed the goal before the year was out.

208,288 Number of acts of service performed

The Brandeis community exceeded its goal of performing  75,000 acts of service this year by more than 175% (as of April 26).

The Next 75 Years

Building on its unique identity and place in higher education, Brandeis is well positioned for the future. The continued loyalty and involvement of alumni will be key to its success.

“Brandeis is your school,” says President Ron Liebowitz. “Together, we can ensure it thrives throughout the next 75 years and beyond.”
