Steve and Lori Fineman, both P’26, are the new co-chairs of the Parents Leadership Council, a volunteer group of 120 Brandeis parents who work to enhance the student experience through their leadership and giving. Here, the Finemans describe the path of their son Spencer ’26 to Brandeis, their motivation for getting involved in the life of the university, and why they think other parents should, too.

What led your family to Brandeis?

Lori: Our children went to the same Jewish summer camp I’d gone to as a kid. Over the years, we heard about Brandeis from many different camp counselors.

At the same time, our son — who grew up in a tight-knit Jewish community in Manhattan and spent a summer in Israel — is social justice-minded. He wanted a college environment that was welcoming to a Jewish community but had a diverse student body. He was also drawn to Brandeis’ excellent academic reputation and opportunities.

Brandeis checked a lot of boxes. And when we visited campus for a tour and interview, he ran into one of his favorite camp counselors, a Brandeis student, who assured him, “You’re going to love it here.”

What inspired you to start working with the PLC?

Steve: It’s obviously nice to support our son’s endeavors, but we’re also drawn to Brandeis’ position as a thought leader on Jewish values, like combating antisemitism, and on other issues of social importance. That resonates with us.

Brandeis also occupies an unusual place in the university landscape. It’s a small university that punches way above its weight.

Why should other parents get involved?

Steve: The primary way parents can support a school is financially. Because Lori and I have a lot of experience in working with private and nonprofit schools, we understand that tuition dollars don’t pay for everything inside and outside the classroom.

Lori: That’s exactly right. We also want to create opportunities for others. Not all students can necessarily afford an education, and they could obviously benefit tremendously from having one.

At Brandeis, it all circles back to the university’s mission and values, and its commitment to justice and Jewish identity. I just feel very happy and proud to stand behind and support Brandeis.
