Employee Recognition Awards

The Lou Ennis Award and the Louis and Helen Zirkel Award

The Lou Ennis Award, named for the former Assistant Vice President for Employee Relations who retired in 1995, and the Louis and Helen Zirkel Award, made possible by Lehigh University Professor Perry A. Zirkel in honor of his parents, are presented annually to staff members who have made significant contributions to Brandeis University.

The Lou Ennis Award recognizes a full-time staff member who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and loyalty to the university. The recipient is selected by a cross-functional committee based on nominations submitted. Nominees should be known for their professionalism, kindness, and respect toward all members of the Brandeis community. They should go above and beyond in their role and contribute consistently to the success and well-being of the university.

The Louis and Helen Zirkel Award honors a full-time staff member who has made noteworthy contributions to improving their department and the university as a whole. Nominees should demonstrate efforts that surpass their job requirements and significantly support the Brandeis mission. The recipient is also selected by a cross-functional committee based on the nominations received.

To nominate a staff member for either award, please use the online form. All nominations for the Ennis and Zirkel Awards are due to Human Resources on or before March 21, 2025.

*Disclaimer- we've previously used two separate nomination forms. This year we’ve consolidated the nominations to one form. After voting has closed, the selection committee will review the nominees and assign them to the appropriate category based on their position.

On-the-Spot Rewards Program

Employees deserve to be recognized for their extra efforts. The On-the-Spot Rewards Program is designed to enhance the university's culture of recognition by rewarding employees who go above and beyond their job responsibilities, and to encourage initiative and creativity, in service of students and all constituents. By providing a spot bonus reward, managers have the opportunity to provide a meaningful “thank you” and connect the reward to the contribution and/or performance being recognized. See eligibility and program details
